Backgammon ACT (Greg Ash and Martin Pikler) recently helped run a backgammon tournament for the 2024 Australian Transplant Games. We supplied the boards and equipment for the event and also devised a format (Round Robin, DMP) that could accommodate varying numbers and skill levels.
The Australian Transplant Games are a celebration of the ‘Gift of Life’. They encourage transplant recipients to improve their health and fitness while showcasing the life-changing benefits of organ donation. The Games promote the important message that transplantation saves lives – and every Australian can leave a legacy by registering as an organ and tissue donor. To register as a donor, visit www.donatelife.gov.au
According to event coordinator, Margaret Martin from WA the competition was so much better for having your expertise there. In the past the event has often been run by one of the Games organisers and it is so much richer for having the involvement of a Backgammon Club.
The two finalists (winner Corinne Perrett and Runner-up Jason Ringrose) were certainly deserving of their placings, and on the supporters side the lone entrant (Chantal Mattison) was in one of the RR pools, but won all three of her matches. Kaitlyn Steavenson took third place for a medal.
Ms Martin added her thanks for our patience in dealing with the ever-changing numbers involved. She said “You may be used to this but it makes it more difficult when you have to play within a tight time frame. Please know your efforts were really appreciated. I have attached a few photos of the event for your interest”.
