As passionate backgammon players, we want nothing more than to see a fair and sustainable organisation
promoting backgammon across our two countries and the world.
The ANZBGF and broader community was rocked by the passing of backgammon great Tino Lechich in January.
The highest ranked player in Australia and New Zealand, Tino was the reigning champion in both the ANZBGF and Australian Masters and recent runner up in the Australian Championship. Tino was also the 2025 ANZBGF Live Points Champion.
Melbourne-born Tino has been a world-renowned backgammon and poker player for the past 40 years. He was ranked number 12 in the first-ever list of the Giants of World Backgammon and his expertise in the high-pressure world of international poker earned him prizemoney of more than $1.5 million.
For those in the Australian and New Zealand backgammon community who knew him well or just made his acquaintance at a live event, he was just an approachable good sport. He will be sadly missed.
The backgammon podcast! In each episode host, Ed Hall, interviews backgammon players and authors, teachers and commentators, board makers and organisers… anyone and everyone with a backgammon story to tell.
